My bet is this...

Kinja'd!!!

I’d say its a Buick Envision made in the Yanyai North plant (maybe Dong Yue?) by Shanghai GM . Has the 2.0 4 cyl turbo with VVT set up for E15 , aluminum 19" wheels, black/nuetral leather interior, Subterranian metallic paint. Really surprised at that it has active noise cancellation , rear camera, glasses pocket and garage door openers. Am I wrong? Whats really weird is its optioned with the E15 code FJW but the main engine spec says E85.

There’s a lot of different units of measurement of pressure: ATM, mmHg, etc. Also 100 kPa = 1 bar. When I was a chemical engineering student and got to choose the units I used, I used bar, it makes the most sense to me. Despite being an American, I’d prefer if we’d use the metric system, the most annoying thing was when a professor taught in English units. What the fuck is a slug.

A slug is a standard American unit of mass, the analogue to the kilogram. Lbs are a unit of weight, with their metric analogue being Newtons. Lbs and kg are not comparable units.

As a Canadian, I can’t remember seeing a tire gauge with bar on it, only kPa. Of course I also haven’t met many people who don’t just flip it around and use the psi side.

Its a Chinese car maker, it makes a lot of models for GM, VW and Iveco:

And they have own brands such as LDV (Maxus), MG Motors and Roewe.

Too much potential for confusion. I don’t know how much the mass and weight would matter to a chemical engineer (not being condescending, I literally don’t know) but if you get into aerospace stuff (my educational background is in mechanical engineering) where the weight of an object does change significantly, it plays a pretty big role. Clarity is always good.

Slug is also just such a good name for a unit. Short, sweet, and to the point.

Probenja is right, it’s a manufacturer based in Shanghai which many Western automakers license models for them to build. The acronym itself stands for Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, thus SAIC. Likely this new Buick was produced by SAIC in China. (Well that goes back to the L VIN question...)

Must be a North American thing - my JDM car has its pressure requirements printed on the usual sticker on the door frame in bar and the pressure gauges I see are all bar/psi.

Mind you I recall seeing a Transit van which had weight limits printed on some part or other in N rather than the usual kg..

It is? I know they use some odd units in America but a “slug” is a new one to me. Is it commonly used, as in “my car weighs 3,000 slugs” or whatever?

Kinja'd!!! gogmorgo - rowing gears in a Grand Cherokee > Cé hé sin
06/21/2016 at 12:11

No, the slug is not commonly used at all. Most people wouldn’t even know what it is.

All my Niva’s Canadian stickers use kg, but the repair manuals etc (translated directly and somewhat crudely from Russian) all have weights in N. I had to get an alignment done as part of a safety inspection, and obviously the shop didn’t have the specs, so I printed them off the pages from the manual... they got the alignment wrong the first time because they couldn’t figure out how to create a “static load of 3140N” on the vehicle. Why the alignment is supposed to be done loaded I don't know, but that weight is roughly equivalent to four passengers and 80lbs in the trunk. Effectively a full load.

Have any actually sold? I am in decent Volvo-country where some people appreciate unusual cars, and haven’t seen one.

I call those LWB normal cars “centipedes” or “dachshunds” due to the stretched look.

No idea. I was surprised it was an L and not a C or whatever. It’s just a regional designation, doesn’t have to stand for something I guess. For instance, USA is 1 (because ‘merica #1!!), Canada and Mexico are 2 and 3. Japan is J, and South Korea is K, Germany is W, but from there is gets hazy. Looks like C is locked up by Benin (wherever that is), Madagascar (and Madagascar 2), and Tunisia.

It originally stood for Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, but their publicly traded offshoot is known simply as SAIC Motor Corp., and their joint venture with GM is officially SAIC General Motors.

I’ve heard some people- mainly MG Rover (remember them?) executives - pronounce it as a word “Say-Ick”, but most just pronounce the letters.
